We got home briefly…

We got home briefly…

So, this last week has been a bit of a shit storm with everything that I outlined in the last post. But unfortunately, it didn’t end there because after getting home late on Tuesday, we came back into the Women’s and Kids via ED on Thursday afternoon.

After being home for just over 24 hours, Alex started to show a few minor symptoms; including a fever (which didn’t make sense given he was still on some gnarly antibiotics) and the final straw, was complaint of abdominal pain. So back we came to ED, and straight through the queue because of his complex history and the concern about his fever. Jenny and I left about 9 and after a restless night, I woke to a message that Jo and Alex were still in ED.

There’s a lot of reasons for this, primarily that there wasn’t space in the ward for him until someone was discharged late morning. But then started the tests, questions and confusion because no one could actually tell us what was wrong. In the meantime, I’ve managed to get more assessments done for the course that made last week so difficult and watch the F1 from Melbourne today.

There are multiple departments involved in his treatment (currently Sunday night) including infectious diseases, ENT specialists, Gen Med and Paediatric Medicine. The general consensus is that they’re not sure what’s wrong, or what the next steps are; but because he’s steadily getting better, they’re happy we’re on the right track.

Half a step back from there though — sorry, ADHD brain is in full flight: it’s Sunday night and I’m tired — to this morning when his canula failed at 4 am when he was due for more IV antibiotics. After a couple of failed attempts to get another one in, Alex had enough and wanted to be left alone. A few phone calls later, the decision was made to let him go onto oral medication.

This was where we tripped up last time, so for now we wait (I suspect, based on a few conversations) at least 48 hours until we can go home, hopefully on Tuesday. That’s the best I can manage for now, time for bed.
